Course Overview
Delivered over one day in a small-group format, this course brings you up to date with current Australian and international guidance on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). It covers how MRONJ is defined, staged and distinguished from conditions that mimic it, how it develops, and which medications and patient factors increase risk. It then turns to what matters most in general practice: structured risk assessment, prevention, timing of treatment and surgical technique for patients taking antiresorptive, antiangiogenic or other at-risk medications, with a supervised practical on bio-models. This course also discusses referral pathways for established MRONJ.
Who it’s for:
General dentists and medical practitioners who treat patients taking bisphosphonates, denosumab, romosozumab or other medications associated with MRONJ, and who want a clear, guideline-based approach to assessing risk, planning extractions and recognising when to refer.
Prerequisites:
Current general registration as a dentist or medical practitioner with AHPRA.
Your instructor:
Dr Daniel Girgis is dual-qualified in medicine and dentistry, having completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Adelaide (2014) and his Doctor of Dental Medicine at the University of Western Australia (2020). His surgical experience includes a residency at St George Hospital (2016) and a position as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Registrar at Prince of Wales Hospital (2021). In 2023 he founded Mobile Oral Surgery Services (MOSS), which provides oral surgery and sedation services to over 25 dental clinics across Sydney and the Central Coast. He is a published author in the field of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and has presented his research at an international conference. With a passion for teaching and an approachable, hands-on style, he founded AAOSE to help general dentists safely, predictably and confidently expand their clinical skills in oral surgery.
